Of the six types of Romagnol counrty houses the Forlì type is the most widespread, probably because is the simplest and cheapest. In the following very bad photo (please excuse me) we see some Gurkhas near a Pack 40 and behind an house of this type in Morciano, a town south west of Rimini.
Obiovusly of the type we can find several variants, the rule is the gabled roof of the main body. Some houses have only one body side, some have a body side with a rectangular front, some have three roof slopes upon body side. There are also variants in the planning of the spaces inside but it is less important for my research. Here is an example between Forlì and Ravenna.
I decided to build the bulk of my houses of this type.
Sometime we can find devozional subjects in front.
Here is a house I ever seen in my youth and sometime ….I dream.
Start in the afternoon in normal formation with Alberto and Fausto, forehand to Terracina to visit the place of Tempio di Giove anxur (indeed of Venere), another great sacred place built by Repubblican Romans. We arrived in the evening and I have the unpleasant surprise of having lost the wallet with all documents and money. My friens understand the situation and decide to indulge in a hearty dinner to raise my moral; they will finance (on credit).
The hill is overlooking the sea.
Then start to Minturno, bypassing Gaeta. Here we are in the land of Volscian pentapoli (five towns) but archeological remains are from the roman town.
We arrive in Cassino in the afternoon and quickly climb to the monastery. Dominance is really impressive.
We visit share 593 , the back of German positions, and Polish cemetry.
From share 593 to the monastery.
This is the cave that housed the German command.
After taking dinner and bath the unthinkable happens. Alberto out of the shower tumbling falls slipping on smooth floor. After a sleeplees night because of the pain, after a bandage, he start going back to home (more than 500 km). We will know then he broke his shoulder blade.
Saddened we go to visit the monastery one of the most important place of European culture. Free entrance, very nice video on the save the treasures before the bombing, nice museum. From monastery great sight on the battlefield. Zooming one can see on the hill in the left the monument on share 593,to the left of the monument there is the steep rocky were is the cave of German command, below the Polish Cemetery In the center right you see the Snake’s Head Ridge ; allies attacked from right to left.
After a visit to German Cemetery we start to go to Sepino but near Caserta a storm stop us in a gas station four hours, then we know the road is blocked by hail and snow(!!!) and we return turning to Isernia under heavy rain. Next morning we go to Pietrabbondante were was a Sammnite amphitheatre and temple, the remains are Roman but the spirit among these nice hills is Sammnite. The base of the temple from down and up.
Pietrabbondante. Sammnites were primarly pastors and their communities were divided among villages and oppida, fortified enclosures that could accomodate men and flocks. We can see along the road the “tratturi” , wide (some hundreds meters) trails for animals , running from Puglia.
We take a lunch in the nice town of Bagnoli del Trigno, then we see the remains of Sammnites oppidum wall in Duronia and finally we arrive in Sepino. It is great! You can see a medioeval village grown up inside Roman walls (opus reticulatum) with round towers and four gates, were was a Roman town, with foro, temples, amphitheater, etc. But are very nice also the medioeval houses! I must still admit :Italy is very rich!
Then the return and the end of this beautiful and unlucky travel.
Here a pair of houses I made with a base of cardboard, walls of cork, painted first with cementite, then with a mix of water, plaster, glue. Floor and roof are made of PVC and tiles of cardboard. White was the most common color because it was the cheapest; others colors were the ranges of pink, pastel, yellow.
Low hills type.
I started my project leaving apart military and searching for physical appearence of the area.
In 1944 Romagna was mainly an agricoltural land so I turned my attention to farms and country houses.
As you can see there aren’t Ravenna type, because we can find it in a small area, and high hills type, because it varies greatly and depends on the slope of the ground.
